About Tigers

Bengal Tigers are native to Asia.  Male tigers are larger than female tigers. The heaviest Bengal tiger weighed about 857 pounds. The female tigers are much smaller and weigh about 200-300 pounds.

Tigers live a very solitary life and are extremely territorial. They are predatory cats who hunt in open areas, such as grasslands and fields, but they prefer to live in the depths of the forest. Tigers are also good swimmers.

Tigers have reddish brown fur with very distinctive stripes which are deep brown or black.  Most tigers have more than one hundred stripes and just like human fingerprints, each animal has its own unique pattern. The stripes are not only on the fur, but on the skin of the tiger as well.

The tigress carries her young for about 100 days before giving birth to 3 or 4 cubs which weigh only 2 pounds at birth. The female tigers raise their young alone and are fiercely protective of them because males may occasionally kill the cubs.

The Siberian Tiger is the largest living cat in the world. Siberian tigers possess both grace and beauty. Their white winter coat lacks the red stripes of tigers from warmer climates to help camouflage it in its snowy habitat. It must withstand temperatures as low as -50˚F, so the Siberian tiger has a longer, thicker coat than other tigers. It also develops a layer of fat on its flanks and belly that helps to insulate it

The Siberian tiger occupies a very large territory which can range up to 4,000 square miles. The tiger may inhabit the same territory for many years if food sources are stable. If prey is scarce, it often migrates hundred of miles.  They spend a lot of time hunting because only about one in ten of its trips is successful. It preys mainly on deer and wild pig, but it also eats fish.

The male tiger is solitary, shunning other males. He allows tigers of either sex to pass through his range but is more tolerant of females. The female is sometimes accompanied by her young.
